San Pedro City Mayor Lourdes “Baby” Cataquiz strongly supports the “Ayoko sa Lamok ” anti-dengue campaign spearheaded by the Youth in Action (YIA) which aims to get rid of mosquito larvae in the city.
Mosquitoes bring in malaria along with 16 other diseases according to the World Health Organization. Dengue and malaria have been the causes of deaths more fatal than those due to animal bites. Deaths occurring from malaria have surpassed the number of deaths from the World Wars I and II combined. Children who are 12 years and below are vulnerable to get the diseases.
Previously, the use of fogging or fumigation to get rid of mosquitoes led to negative results. The chemical component of the fogging solution also kills predators, the beneficial species that eat mosquitoes. Keeping the predator species alive will help maintain balance in the environment.
The overwhelming and uncontrolled number of hatched mosquito larvae appears to be the culprit for its annoying (and deadly) bites in humans. For the two-month life span of a female mosquito, it can lay as much as 3,000 to 4,000 eggs. These eggs, when hatched as adult mosquitoes, can outnumber the beneficial species like the spiders, lizards and dragonflies. When this happens, the possibility of a mosquito-related disease outbreak could be on the rise. This is the logical and valid reason for the total control of the larvae of the mosquitoes against the popular and unquestioned belief that the adult mosquitoes are the ones that should only be destroyed.
