That was what City Mayor Baby Cataquiz did for more than six hours when she listened to 22 principals and school heads of public elementary and high schools in San Pedro during the first ever “DEpEd Summit with the Mayor” held on August 20, 2015 at the Crimson Hotel in Alabang.
The school officials candidly brought ought problems, issues and concerns impacting on their operations, mainly on the need for additional infrastructures and equipment. Ongoing and planned projects for different public schools funded and managed by the City Government were also discussed in detail. At the end of the summit, Mayor Cataquiz committed to act expeditiously on the concerns which still need to be attended to.
“This is perfect timing because we are now in the midst of preparing our 2016 annual budget. Please rest, assured that education will be THE top priority in our next year’s budget. I always believe that good education is the key to turning out students who can be assets to the community. Together we will plan and ensure that our funds for education are judiciously allocated and correctly spent”, Mayor Baby said.
In his welcome statement, City Administrator Fil Sibulo said that the summit was planned to be an opportunity to gain insight on the current status of our public education, with the long term twin goals to build a stable and enlightened society and to bring back the glorious days of public education in San Pedro. “Our students deserve quality education”, he said.
DepED San Pedro District Supervisor Romulo Dicdican so lauded the Mayor’s pro-active attitude to solving the problems of public education in the city. “We are grateful that our local government through the Mayor will now address our education concerns with purposive dedication and deliberate and timely effort towards realization”.
